Attic junk removal is a topic that isn’t discussed very often. In this blog post we will go over some of the pros and cons of using the attic as storage space. And what to do when you get ready to clear out the attic…..

Attics are a great space to store items for only ONE reason….it’s because they are an open and usually unused space in most homes. That’s it, there’s no other reason.

In our opinion there are several reasons to not use an attic as storage and they are as follows…

The number one reason why we recommend not using the attic as storage space is heat and cold.

• • Most attics are not climate controlled and the heat can get as high as 130+ degrees and gets as cold as the outdoor temperature of your area. These vast differences in temperature are brutal on whatever you’re storing in the attic. The high heat will eventually destroy plastic bags if you are storing items in bags. The bags just crumble when you pick them up… We’ve never been in a humid attic, only hot ones. But if you live in a humid environment the humidity can also wreak havoc on the items you are store and can lead to issues such as mold and mildew…

Another reason to not store items in the attic is how much room you have, height of the attic, head space, whatever you want to call it..

• • Most attics have very low head space which make getting around in them difficult. They usually have small openings too. This make getting things into and out of the attic a challenge.

The third reason we are against storing items in the attic is because of pests, such as mice, raccoons and squirrels.

• • Mice, raccoons and squirrels love living in attics and turning your stored items into a home or using your items to build their nests.  This leads to possible contamination of your items from feces and urine from these new inhabitants of your attic, especially from the mice, raccoons and squirrels. The last reason we are against storing items in the attic is… out of sight, out of mind…

• • Most items that are stored in the attic are never thought of again, until it’s time to clean out the attic….If they are sentimental items they will usually be destroyed by the heat, cold and possibly water if there is a leak in your attic.

If you need to store items in the attic with the extreme temperatures, the hassle of getting the items into and out of the attic, possible rodent contamination,  AND usually never using the item again, do you really even need it anymore? Probably not….
